Obama last night: “It can’t happen without you, without a new spirit of service, a new spirit of sacrifice.”

Mmmm..

And here’s a partial list of his promises from a speech he gave last week.

“eliminate income taxes on Social Security for seniors making under $50,000″;

“give homeowners and working parents additional tax breaks”;
not increase taxes on anyone if they “make under $250,000; you will not see your taxes increase by a single dime –- not your income taxes, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains tax”;

“end those breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas”;

“give tax breaks to companies that invest right here in the United States”;

“eliminate capital gains taxes for small businesses and start-up companies that are the engine of job creation in this country”;

“create two million new jobs by rebuilding our crumbling roads, and bridges, and schools — by laying broadband lines to reach every corner of the country”;

“invest $15 billion a year in renewable sources of energy to create five million new energy jobs over the next decade”;

“give a tax break to 95 percent of Americans who work every day and get taxes taken out of their paycheck every week”;

“reopen old factories, old plants, to build solar panels, and wind turbines”;
build “a new electricity grid”;

“build the fuel efficient cars of tomorrow”;

“eliminate the oil we import from the Middle East in 10 years”;

“lower premiums” for those who already have health insurance;

“if you don’t have health insurance, you’ll be able to get the same kind of health insurance that members of Congress give themselves”;

“end discrimination by insurance companies to the sick and those who need care the most”;

“invest in early childhood education”;

“recruit an army of new teachers”;

“pay our teachers higher salaries, give them more support. But … also demand higher standards and more accountability”;

“make a deal with every young person who’s here and every young person in America: If you are willing to commit yourself to national service, whether it’s serving in our military or in the Peace Corps, working in a veterans home or a homeless shelter, then we will guarantee that you can afford to go to college no ifs ands or buts”;

“stop spending $10 billion a month in Iraq whole the Iraqis have a huge surplus”;

“end this war in Iraq”;

“finish the fight and snuff out al Qaeda and bin Laden”;

“increase our ground troops and our investments in the finest fighting force in the world”;

“invest in 21st century technologies so that our men and women have the best training and equipment when they deploy into combat and the care and benefits they have earned when they come home”;

“No more homeless veterans”; and

“no more fighting for disability payments.”

We’ll be watching with baited bated breath.

According to an Associated Press report last week, Obama has approached Cong. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) about possibly serving as the White House chief of staff. Emanuel — nicknamed “Rahmbo” for his hyper-partisan tactics — is a very close friend of David Axelrod, Obama’s campaign strategist. According to a Newsweek report, Emanuel “grew up, somewhat weirdly, to study ballet and practice Chicago politics.” He once sent a dead fish to a pollster who displeased him. If Obama is elected, this may be the man who conducts the liberal orchestra for Obama’s “post-partisan” administration.

WASHINGTON—African-American man Barack Obama, 47, was given the least-desirable job in the entire country Tuesday when he was elected president of the United States of America. In his new high-stress, low-reward position, Obama will be charged with such tasks as completely overhauling the nation’s broken-down economy, repairing the crumbling infrastructure, and generally having to please more than 300 million Americans and cater to their every whim on a daily basis. As part of his duties, the black man will have to spend four to eight years cleaning up the messes other people left behind. The job comes with such intense scrutiny and so certain a guarantee of failure that only one other person even bothered applying for it. Said scholar and activist Mark L. Denton, “It just goes to show you that, in this country, a black man still can’t catch a break.”

“I hope to God I’m wrong, but there are 7,000 known gang members in Chicago and they aren’t going to miss an opportunity like this,” says Paul Huebl, a former police officer in the city and now a respected author and crime blogger.

“Police officers will be gravely outnumbered and outgunned and placed in danger.

“There is no way to protect businesses. Parents and kids are going to think they’re going to a party and they’re going to end up getting hurt.”

More than a million people are said to be planning to celebrate the expected election of the first black President of the United States.

Just 65,000 will be allowed inside a security cordon to see Obama on stage inside the city’s scenic Grant Park, which borders the shores of Lake Michigan.

But hundreds of thousands more are expected in the vicinity, and there are fears that whether Obama wins or loses, looting and gun violence will flare.

Last summer, Grant Park hosted the ‘Taste of Chicago’ food festival. Four were shot, one fatally.

In 1992, hundreds of police officers were hurt when riots flared during sporting celebrations for the Chicago Bulls.

A year later, when the Bulls triumphed again, there were more riots - this time four people were killed.

There was another riot in Grant Park when pop band Sly and the Family Stone cancelled a concert.

TOLEDO, OHIO — Toledo police are gearing up for possible “Civil unrest” during and after tomorrow’s today’s elections.

In an internal memo (PDF) obtained exclusively by NBC 24 News, officers are ordered to “Have their riot equipment with them Tuesday and Wednesday”. Police chief Mike Navarre confirms, officers will have gear similar to the equipment they used during the 2005 race riots. “They have been asked to have their helmets and their gas masks available tomorrow and Wednesday.”, Navarre says, “That’s the equipment they would not normally carry with them on a normal day”.

Navarre also says, officers will not be stationed at individual polling stations. But the memo says otherwise. It reads, “On Tuesday, units shall be directed to patrol the polling locations”.

I wonder if Bob G. and Phil Marx have bought extra ammo?

Congress shouldn’t have passed the rescue plan to take troubled assets off bank balance sheets, Democratic congressional candidate Michael Montagano said Friday.

Rep. Mark Souder, R-3rd, defended his support of the bill – which passed with 172 Democrats and 91 Republicans – because “we had a rock coming down the hill that was going to take the city.”

They were questioned during a debate about their views on the economic rescue plan, earmarks, energy, health care, the attacks each has used in his TV commercials and their experience for the job.

What? Montagano actually showed up for a debate? He’s missed the prior debates or shown up too late. Keep in mind, only six days ago Montagano had this to say:

But Montagano has done nothing to capitalize on the unpopularity of Souder’s decision, and he didn’t weigh in during the week Congress was tussling with the issue.

“I’m not sure that’s for me to say,” he said in an interview with The Journal Gazette.

“I didn’t think that we needed to inject any more politics in it,” Montagano said, castigating the two presidential candidates for involving themselves in the negotiations between the White House and Congress.

“We watched John McCain and Barack Obama try to get involved in this bailout and, I believe, screwed it up in the middle. It’s possibly why the first (bill) failed,” he said. “Politics, I believe, didn’t have a place in it.

“You’re talking about probably the biggest piece of legislation in my lifetime, solving one of the biggest crises of my lifetime and perhaps of the last several decades. And you have people trying to play politics.”

So, now he’s proving he’s a liar and playing politics. Nice.

Also:

Third District Congressional Candidate Mark Souder picked up support from a surprising place. The journal Gazette is endorsing Souder over the weekend saying his opponent Mike Montagano lacks “experience” and a “willingness to communicate on key issues.”

Give it up Mr. Ed.

Erica Jong Tells Italians Obama Loss ‘Will Spark the Second American Civil War. Blood Will Run in the Streets’

It seems that the final days of the presidential campaign have made Erica Jong and her friends more than a little anxious.

A few days ago, Jong, the author and self-described feminist, gave an interview to the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, the choicest bits of which were brought to my attention by the reliably sharp-eyed Christian Rocca, the U.S. correspondent of Il Foglio, who published excerpts on his Camillo blog. Basically, Jong says her fear that Obama might lose the election has developed into an “obsession. A paralyzing terror. An anxious fever that keeps you awake at night.” She also says that her friends Jane Fonda and Naomi Wolf are extremely worried that Obama will be sabotaged by Republican dirty tricks, and that if an Obama loss indeed comes to pass, the result will be a second American Civil War.
