Study finds 11% drop in illegal immigrants
Conservatives hail the report as proof Bush’s controversial policy of enforcement via workplace raids is working.

Wet_backs

WASHINGTON — A report Wednesday indicating a marked decline in the number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. fueled a widening national debate over the Bush administration’s policy of immigration enforcement through aggressive workplace raids.

The largest such enforcement action was in May in Postville, Iowa, where federal immigration agents descended on a meatpacking plant and arrested nearly 400 workers later detained in a building used to house cattle.

At least they let them go inside a building.

The report by the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington-based think tank, says that the number of illegal immigrants fell about 11% between last August and May, from 12.5 million to 11.2 million. More…

And only 11 million to go.

I don’t see any Smiths, Jones or Talaricos on that list. They’re all Burmese and Mexican names.

mowing lawnPhoenix mayor asks FBI to check sheriff

PHOENIX - The mayor wants the FBI to investigate whether the local county sheriff has violated any civil rights laws with his recent high-profile crackdowns on illegal immigrants.

The “saturation patrols” have drawn protests from civil rights and immigrant-rights advocates, but they have drawn support from backers of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and from people who believe the government hasn’t done enough against illegal immigration.

In an April 4 letter to U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey, Mayor Phil Gordon asked the agency and the Justice Department’s civil rights division to examine what he called discriminatory harassment and improper stops, searches, and arrests by sheriff’s deputies in Maricopa County, which encompasses the metropolitan area.

[...]

Arpaio said it’s ironic that Gordon wrote the letter the same day U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials observed his deputies arresting residents and illegal immigrants in the town of Guadalupe and approved of the sheriff’s work.

“I think the mayor is disconnected from the people he represents and he doesn’t get the point,” Arpaio said Saturday. “Now he’s going to Washington to confuse the issue and try to get the public against me.”

The mayor “is degrading my office and my deputies by insinuating that they’re violating all these civil laws. We don’t profile,” the sheriff said.

In the past month, sheriff’s deputies and trained volunteers have gone into neighborhoods with large Hispanic populations, stopping people for routine traffic violations and asking some of them about their immigration status. Dozens of illegal immigrants have been detained.

ICE officials say Arpaio is not violating the formal agreement he has with their office that allows sheriff’s deputies to enforce immigration laws.

Allen County Sheriff Ken Fries may soon have the same authority. There may be quite a few drywaller and landscaping jobs available in Allen County if that happens.

‘Speak English’ Signs OK at Philly Shop
Ruling: ‘Speak English’ Signs at Philadelphia Cheesesteak Shop Not Discriminatory

The owner of a famous cheesesteak shop did not discriminate when he posted signs asking customers to speak English, a city panel ruled Wednesday.

In a 2-1 vote, a Commission on Human Relations panel found that two signs at Geno’s Steaks telling customers, “This is America: WHEN ORDERING ‘PLEASE SPEAK ENGLISH,’” do not violate the city’s Fair Practices Ordinance.

Shop owner Joe Vento has said he posted the signs in October 2005 because of concerns over immigration reform and an increasing number of people in the area who could not order in English.

Vento has said he never refused service to anyone because they couldn’t speak English. But critics argued that the signs discourage customers of certain backgrounds from eating at the shop.

My great grandfather came here from Italy and learned the English language. There’s no excuse for those that refuse to learn English. This is American and we speak English.

One would like to think the least we could expect Indiana’s self-professed Christian Universities is to stand up for life by not honoring and fawning over public leaders who routinely support abortion on demand, do not support and uphold traditional family values and believe illegal immigrants are somehow entitled to social security.

Bayh..

  • Voted NO on criminal penalty for harming unborn fetus during other crime. (Mar 2004)
  • Voted NO on barring HHS grants to organizations that perform abortions. (Oct 2007)

I came across this today in the Journal Gazette

Anti-immigrant sentiment wrong

I have read countless letters with the basic theme of “send the illegal Mexicans back to Mexico. We are losing jobs to Mexicans; wages are lower; you name it, they did it.”

Here’s a thought – why don’t we just round them all up and lock them into work camps? They want to work, so let’s make them work!

This idea is not original. Adolf Hitler thought of the Jews the same way some Americans think of Mexicans. He had the Jews locked in work camps and before long decided that he could do better and tried to exterminate all of them.

I am an American – part Irish, German and Cherokee Indian. All of my ancestors have been hated at one time or another.

Wrong. There is no comparison between Hitler and the Nazi’s treatment of Jews and American sentiment for people that have broken the law to enter this county. Hitler saw the Jewish people as inferior and was out to create a master Aryan race. That’s no comparison to how people feel about Spanish people. They’re not hated and you don’t read about hate crimes being perpetrated against Mexicans everyday do you?

The fact is they’re here illegally. My great grandfather immigrated here from Italy “legally” and still suffered from discrimination. However, that was at the hands of other immigrants - your Irish ancestors included. For the record, I have Irish ancestors as well. Illegal immigrants are a drain on our school systems, social welfare systems and healthcare systems. I think the term is freeloader.

America stole its land from the Indians and Mexicans. Before the white men “discovered” America, this land was already the land of the Indians. Mexicans were thrown off their land in what is now California, Texas, New Mexico and elsewhere so that this could become a new nation. Where would you be if the Indians let the Pilgrims starve to death or simply tossed the European illegal immigrants back into the sea?

So are you saying you want to allow illegal activity due to historical facts that cannot be changed? Somehow you forgot to mention we also had slavery. Get over it, that’s in the past and this is in the here and now.

We need to start treating people the way we want to be treated. Think – what would Jesus do?

D.J. MICHAELS Howe

How about they treat our country with the respect and dignity our forefathers did and follow the law of the land and immigrate here legally? What a novel concept.
