Sitting in the office about 45 minutes ago and after hearing 10 or so emergency vehicles head down Jefferson my secretary and I decided to go investigate. An accident had occurred on Ardmore, south of West Jefferson.

According to a witness we spoke with the car in front of her was heading south on Ardmore just past Washington Street when the vehicle sped up, and suddenly veered left towards a drainage ditch. As the vehicle exited the road and entered the ditch in flipped 180 degrees onto it’s top and landed upside down in about a foot of water.

The witness was the first on the scene and when she got to the victim she was apparently suffering from a seizure.

Update: The News Sentinel reported she was pronounced dead sometime before 10:15 a.m

The fire last night at the Hunt Club apartments could have been a disaster if not for the combined efforts of the Fort Wayne Fire Department, Aboite Fire Township Volunteer Fire Department and the Southwest Allen Fire District. The water pressure in the few available hydrants was close to non-existent. There is a hydrant located directly in front of the burning building, but without adequate pressure the hoses start sucking air rendering them impotent. Another hydrant located on Illinois Road (a couple hundred feet west of Hadley) was completely shut-off. While it was eventually turned on over an hour after the fire was reported, it lacked sufficient pressure. This forced the combined department tankers to continue to shuttle water from Magnavox Way and another location at Covington & I-69 to prevent the disruption of what little water was available.

In the end, the Southwest tankers dumped 12 tank loads @ 2600 gallons each or 31,200 gallons of water and Aboite dumped their two tankers (2500 and 3,000 gallon capacity) 9 times for an approximate total of over 55,000 gallons. How much was pulled off the hydrants is not known at this time. The tankers unloaded into portable dump tanks setup in the middle of Illinois Road. The water was then pumped approximately 1/4 mile across an empty field to the scene of the fire.

I have a request in with the city and Bill Etzler of Aqua Indiana to determine who was providing water to which hydrants and why there was inadequate pressure.

Here’s the list of the fire vehicles used last night to contain the Hunt Club fire.

Tankers feed the portable tank due to the city hydrant being shut-off.

As I was watching the events unfold a neighbor of mine pointed out a fire hydrant with the caps off and no water running out of it. I asked one of the firefighters if it was a dry plug and he stated “it’s a city hydrant, and they had it turned off but it’s coming on now”. That was an hour after I heard the first sirens. Why did it take so long?

As you can see by the pictures the city called on quite a few tankers to ferry water to a portable tank assembled in the middle of highway 14 (Illinois Road). Many of the trucks were from the Aboite Volunteer Fire Department. I took close to 100 meg of pictures, but I really need to RTFM on this camera. It was until close to an hour after I got there that I finally got the settings correct for night pics. Click on an image to view all of them at Flickr.

I just got back from the scene of the Hunt Club Apartments which are on fire again. You may recall that there was a fire there back in June of 2007 and local blogger and firefighter Eric Fetcho was on the scene. You can see those pictures here as posted on FWOb.

For close to 45 minutes I heard sirens tonight and decided to walk outside to investigate. Looking down the end of my street the entire north end was awash in lights. I drove the 1000 feet to the end of the street and parked my truck and was immediately approached by a firefighter who said “Hey Dan, can you move your truck, we’ve got tankers coming through here. Oh, and you’d better share some of those pictures with me”. It was none other than Eric Fetcho.

Here are a few pics. I’ll have more in a bit as I go through them. I took over 70 pictures.
