As I have been following along on the discussion I started the other night with some local businesses closing in Fort Wayne when I came across this ditty in the Journal Gazette I was kind of left scratching my head.

Fort Wayne’s efforts to redevelop itself, including the Harrison Square project, are already bringing people (and their wallets) into town, according to the mayor.

Citing the downtown development, Mayor Tom Henry said the city’s redevelopment efforts helped lure the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns annual conference back to Fort Wayne in 2010.

I guess the ultimate difference being what is happening now and who is coming to visit Fort Wayne in the year 2010…

The conference is tentatively scheduled for early October 2010.

Dan O’Connell, president and CEO of the Fort Wayne/Allen County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the Courtyard played a large part in bringing the convention back to Fort Wayne for the first time since 2005.

The convention is estimated to bring more than 800 local government delegates from around the state, along with 100 vendors and several guests.

I was just perusing the news postings on a local radio station website and found this ditty….

FORT WAYNE, IN - Two Fort Wayne businesses have permanently closed their doors in light of burglaries. The respective owners of Cap N’ Cork liquor store on Goshen Avenue and VIP Video on South Anthony say the growing number of armed robberies just made the businesses unsafe for employees and customers.

Wow.

Say it isn’t so! Danny Turkette 50 years old!?!? Hey its all down hill from here darlin! Happy Birthday! And for the record, as far as the quitting smoking, I don’t think you will have much trouble with it, you are without a doubt the most courteous smoker I have ever known. You really don’t need to keep ashtrays around for smoking friends, they should exercise the same courtesy towards you as you have always exercised towards non-smokers!

Have a wonderful birthday, I am glad to hear you are feeling better.

A Soldier’s Christmas

‘Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
in a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone.

I had come down the chimney with presents to give,
and to see just who in this little house lived.

As I looked all about, a strange sight I did see,
No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

No Stockings by mantle, just boots filled with sand,
On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands.

With medals and badges, awards of all kinds,
A sobering thought came through my mind.

For this house was different, it was dark and dreary,
The home of a soldier, I could now see clearly.

The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone,
Curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home.

The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder,
Not how I picture a United States Soldier.

Was this the hero of whom I’d just read?
Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed?

I realized the families that I saw this night,
owed their lives to these soldiers who were willing to fight.

Soon round the world, the children would play,
and grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas day.

They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year,
because of the soldiers, like the one lying here.

I couldn’t help wondering how many lay alone,
on a cold Christmas Eve in a land far from home.

The very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to one knee and started to cry.

The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,
“Santa don’t cry, for this life is my choice”.

I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more,
My life is my God, my country, my corps.”

The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep,
I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.

I kept watch for hours, so silent and still,
as we both shivered from the cold night’s chill.

I didn’t want to leave, on that cold, dark night,
this guardian of honor, so willing to fight.

Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure,
whispered, “Carry on Santa…., It’s Christmas Day…., All is secure.

One look at my watch, and I knew he was right,
Merry Christmas my friend…. and to all a Good Night.
