House Ways and Means Chairman Bill Crawford (D-Indianapolis) walked out of the budget sub-committee this morning just as the committee prepared to take public testimony and took his House Democrat colleagues with him. The committee formed to consider the special session budget was scheduled to take hours of public testimony today, which House Democrats clearly are not interested in listening to.

Crawford took issue with an e-mail sent out by the Mitch for Governor campaign and Indiana Republican Party asking recipients to, *gasp*, come voice their support of Gov. Daniels’ balanced budget. How dare they.

Crawford announced earlier this week that committee time today and tomorrow would be dedicated to public input. To prove he was serious, he scheduled that public comment period during the work day and gave people 48 hours notice. Someone should tell him that people in the real world have to work at 9am on a Thursday.

The House Democrats have repeatedly shut out any opportunity for public input into their actions. Earlier this year Speaker Bauer canceled session when 2,000 people showed up for an anti-tax rally, citing security concerns. A week later, 5,000 union members decended on the statehouse to defend their right to exploit unemployment insurance loopholes and session went forward as planned. It seems House Democrats are fine with public input, as long as it supports their brand of politics.
