I have a friend on a school sponsored outing at Parkview Field for a Tin Caps game today. When they went to purchase a ticket they were asked for their name, address and phone number. They refused to give it, citing they did not want to be on any mailing list. The ticket attendant it was required and when they refused again, a supervisor who was called. The supervisor said it’s required. Again they refused citing not wanting to be on their mailing list. The supervisor told this person that “they don’t sell their lists”. Again they refused. The supervisor then changed gears and stated that if anything happened to them they would need to know who to get a hold of in case of an emergency. Again they refused.

They ended up paying by credit card, and had to show their driver’s license. The ticket attendant started recording their address and they took the license back, stating that they were invading their privacy. They finally got a ticket and went to their lawn seats. After settling in, three times they were approached by security to check on their “well-being.”

I’ve been to both the former RCA Dome and Lucas Field more times than I can count. Not once have I ever been asked to produce identification. How about Memorial Coliseum? Only once in the hundreds of events I’ve attended was I asked to produce ID, and that was when the secret service ran it for a day when Sarah Palin was in town.

I called the ticket office and spoke to Patricia. She said they needed it so they would know who to refund tickets to if the game cancelled. Here is the ticket refund policy from the Tin Caps web site.

RAIN CHECK

In the event that this regulation game is not officially played, this ticket stub may be redeemed for any remaining 2009 Regular Season Game. This stub must be exchanged at the Parkview Field Ticket Office for equal value, with the ability to upgrade, based upon availability. No full or partial cash refunds.

So that story doesn’t fly either. I can understand requiring identification, but demanding an address and phone number is bullshit. They’re just bullying they way into building a mailing list.

Incredible. Maybe they should have named it Obama Field.

    Dan:
I’d just tell them the phone number is private unlisted, and if they pursued it, I’d give ‘em CITY HALL’S number!
When pressed for an address, I can always do a “ditto” from the phone#.

Let King Henry deal with it.

    Then…let them eat HOTDOGS!

    ;)

  2. Bob G. says:

    That’s NOT my *H*, btw.

  3. Denise says:

Well, you would think the employees would all have the same answer to the question of “why” do you need my name, address & phone number. Wasn’t there a mandatory training session before the diamond opened? Think 1984!!!!

  4. Jennifer says:

I’ve been to the Wizards games before and never had that question asked, let alone at Wrigley Field, etc..

I wonder whose brilliant idea it was. Are the Tincaps still owned by the same company?

  5. Charles Langley says:

That is a very disturbing story. But, as Jennifer pointed out, how many others have been made to provide the same information? It seems a very unique story. I’ve only been to one Tin Caps game, but did not have to provide that information. Regardless, the action to pursue one’s private information in unacceptable. “I’m sorry sir, I cannot let you in unless I have your Social Security number,” oh wait, that would be W. Field. Just joking, Dan!

Editor’s note: With so much leftwing lunacy tied to the Fort Wayne stadium, I just had to publish this comment.

That story is unsubstantiated hearsay, and therefore highly suspect. I challenge you to come up with something to back it up, because #5 and I have both attended games and apparently neither one of US were asked for any personal info. Shame on you for the Obama reference at the end too- any reasonable person can see that a stadium who did what you suggest is much more aptly named “Patriot Act Field.” What if the supervisor had said it was a matter of national security, anti-terrorism, homeland security, blah blah blah? Because much more than your address is exposed when you have a WARRANTLESS wiretap on your ass or when the government is monitoring your messages on your AT&T iphone, as was proven.
Take it from a recovering Republican who wised up and joined the Dems and more importantly the ACLU after the W debacle: If you’re still voting Repub it had better be because you’re loaded and don’t like paying taxes… because the “ideals” that once made up the party are, sadly, looong gone. It’s about money baby, and has been for years.
Btw, even if you opposed the stadium all along, it is over now. You should check out a game- I guarantee you will want to go to another. That place is unreal! And the TinCaps began their season with a huge winning streak. So the team has momentum, so does the stadium, the downtown, and the Fort in general. It’s nice to CELEBRATE something amidst all the economical crap for once. Take some pride people! And you should have mentioned- that ticket for the home run lawn seats in question? 5 bucks apiece. Best deal in town- Sit behind home plate for $9.

  7. I was there says:

I have the ticket stub, the woman’s name, my credit card receipt and I am on camera. What more do you want?

  8. timraiders says:

just be sure to have any yes voting ex or current council persons name and address in your memory to give to them when they ask. I’m sure they would want to hear that everyone going to Parkview Field is having a great time.

  9. Sure. says:

Have attended 2 tincaps games thusfar. Have been asked for personal information 0 times.

Sounds like they did indeed Patriot Act your friend. That’s too bad.

    Apologies,

    Dick and George

  10. Mike says:

I have been to 15 TinCap games this year and have been only asked once.

  11. LolaS says:

While reading your complaint, I was in agreement with your friends' refusal to give their personal information. But, I don't believe it actually happened. And especially find it hard to believe that they were harassed that much over this information. I couldn't help but laugh, though, at your childish and erroneous attempt at making a political statement. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not on Obama's mailing list. But your right to privacy was destroyed by Bush II.

  12. Conservprof says:

Hey, I remember you! Weren't you at the zoo last year with one of those VW strollers that comes equipped with a beer cooler, baby wipes, sleeping bag, and 3 lbs of pork rinds? Didn't I see your husband walking out of a strip joint on Goshen Road and then again at the zoo when he guzzled down a Schlitz and made a basket just before entering the ol' Prairie Dog exhibit. Wow. Must be hard being you.
