MAYOR SIGNS REVISION TO NOISE ORDINANCE

Says he has concerns about it, but will sign

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Mayor Tom Henry today signed the revised noise ordinance passed by City Council Tuesday making “light pollution” a violation of city ordinance.

“Although I have concerns about this ordinance”, said Mayor Henry, “it is up to Council to decide what legislative action is appropriate for our community and, in this case, I will support their action..”

“I believe, though, City Council should consider amending this legislation in light of some concerns raised by both citizens and staff members alike. It is my opinion that this ordinance will be difficult to enforce as written and that certain exceptions to its provisions should be considered. Amongst the concerns raised were athletic events held in the evening, holiday light displays and emergency repair work to name a few.”

“Let me say one more thing,” said Mayor Henry. “At the Council meeting last Tuesday, one Council member who is opposed to this action made a very irresponsible statement directing citizens to call 911 if they have a problem with a bright light. That is not the appropriate use of 911. Our dispatchers cannot afford to spend time on calls of this nature when there are urgent, potentially life-and-death calls waiting. I encourage citizens to utilize 311 or call the police department at 427-1222 to report a problem.”

Stupid.

Just goes to show ‘ya…when City Council gets an “idea”, and the “bulb upstairs” goes on…someone WILL inevitably want to pass an ordinance regarding it!
    More government waste?
    Yasureyoubetcha!

Can anyone explain to me where Mr. Henry has shown any “leadership” yet?

if he has concerns than why the hell sign it? typical political hack enjoy the one vote you got for signing it ill bet you lost alot of others.

funny thought if he gets his gambeling den downtown what do you bet it has alot of lights

He showed leadership when he backed out of his lease for a Harrison Square condo. Obviously, his sentiment here reflects that of the majority of the people in this community. His bold example will quickly be followed by others, including White Lodging.

And regarding the light ordinance, all I can say is what a unch of silly twits we have running our government. It is absolutely pathetic that a cop (Marty Bender) would support such an asanine law.

My Noise Pollution question is: Why do the Noise Nazis permit high school bands to harass neighbors with awful music and drum beats night after night and weekend after weekend during band competition times? It seems to me that gymnasiums exist for musical practice and the very football fields that they perform on are available to practice marching.

No law is worthwhile if it is not enforced.

    in defence of highschool bands

why would you buy a house next to a high school if you dont like band music? you have to take some personal responsibility there

This is all “Smoke screen & mirrors” to deflect the real issues that need a shake down in the City of Fort Wayne & Allen County….

    Everyone is now on notice.

I kind of wish our city would focus more on revising it’s zoning laws. It seems we’re able to just build anything on the corner of any neighborhood with bright neon signs and lights at any height and direction. I’ve been in small towns that are more strict with business zoning laws where sign height, color and materials used were strictly enforced so as to not drag down the value of nearby neighborhoods. Sound like a pain? On the contrary, it did not affect business and the integrity and beauty (if that is the appropriate word) remained relatively intact.

Personally, I think more should be done here in ft wayne, where it seems like there is no plan at all.

I’m ducking now to prevent being struck from the stones that will be thrown at me.

    Carol:
Many times I truly believe that this city’s ZONING LAWS and REGULATIONS are written in PENCIL…(or at least disappearing ink).
That would account for all the “arbitrary” changes around town, that’s for sure (and many times NOT for the better).

You think zoning is bad run up against building code if you want some fun. “can I get a permit?”
