ANNAPOLIS | The Scarlet Letter for Maryland sex offenders this Halloween will be a bright orange pumpkin.
That is the symbol on a sign they are required to post on their doors with a warning, in capital letters, to trick-or-treaters: “No candy at this residence.”
The paper signs began arriving last week in the mailboxes of the roughly 1,200 violent and child-sex offenders across the state with a letter explaining how they are to comport themselves on Oct. 31.

In addition to posting the sign, the offenders must stay at home, turn off outside lights and not answer the door, according to the letter obtained by The Washington Times.

(CNN) — Scores of sex offenders in Anderson, South Carolina, will be corralled for Halloween tonight in a move authorities say is needed to keep kids safe as they trick or treat.
Keeping trick or treaters safe from sex offenders is a priority for many law enforcement officials on Halloween.
“At 5 p.m., we are going to require all of our probation/parole/pardon sex offenders to report to the office and they’ll remain here from 5 to 10:30 p.m,” agent Gerald Black, with the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon, told CNN affiliate WYFF.
Authorities in Roanoke, Virginia, will do the same. “You have a safer public. We have all the offenders in this area that are on probation or parole in one location. We know where they are,” Randy Phillips with the Department of Corrections told CNN affiliate WSLS.

“Our agents will be out in force, checking on sex offenders, to ensure that they stay behind locked doors, in dark houses, with absolutely no contact with ‘trick-or-treaters’ on Halloween night,” said Tom Hoffman, California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation director of parole.
Paroled offenders in California have a 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew, cannot leave any outside lights on and may not answer their doors except for law enforcement. Illinois offenders face similar restrictions, including a ban on dressing in a costume.

Sheriff’s deputies in Harris County, Texas, have been checking homes of sex offenders for Halloween decorations and are ready to arrest violators.
“We actually have probation officers riding with us,” Precinct 7 Deputy Johnathon Davis told CNN affiliate KPRC. “They’re going to issue them a citation or their probation is going to be revoked.” More here.
I would advise anyone that have kids out this Halloween in Fort Wayne to go to Family Watch Dog (link) and put in your zip code and search the neighborhoods your kids will be trick-or-treating.
One area I would completely avoid is the Nebraska neighborhood from Leesburg to the west, Spring Street to the north, Main Street to the south and Sherman Blvd to the east. See map below.

God Bless you for posting this! Oh how I wish every county in the United States would follow the lead of Anderson, South Carolina and just corral them all in one place for this night. (Plus it would be perfect for an unexpected fire…or bomb, or….well, my imagination is running away with me. But of course you already know how I feel about these scumbuckets. Worse than murderers I have always said.
not all sex offenders are on the list because of a child and because of this they are also prosocuted sorry cant spell that word,
saying it would be a perfect place for an unexpected bomb,fire,etc is just plain cruel and affects the ones they could be living with lets say a wife must not be god beleivers with that type of attitude arent we taught to forgive, and if we dont forget god forgiving you if you cant forgive. yes there are some really horrible sex offenders out there but some are not.
btw i have been molested by four different men and i have learned to forgive doesnt mean i want anything to do with them im just not letting them cloud my heart
I will make this clear as day! (Clarification at its best) for whoever is in charge for posting sex offenders on here, should know that Im listed as a sex offender also and just happen to be a partner in crime with Jeffery Denton at the top. Oh yes, Im glad I came across this website on accident. Im listed as a sex offender myself, but wait! I have the criminal confinement charge also, and the government passed a law specifying IC # 35-42-3-3 criminal confinment under the sex offender category, Hmmm lets think for a second, is the government smart, I think so myself and I appreciate their efforts in keeping real sex offenders away from kids, I know I don’t want them around my kids when I have some one day, Hmmm if the governement was smarter, they would change the criminal confinment statute. “WHY?”, you ask, Hmmm lets see, I never commited any sex offense in my life to someone under the age of 18. However, the kid that was held against his will was 16, and is that wrong, you bet your bottom dollar it is! I myself got charged with aiding in criminal confinement, because I was the driver and lookout guy for a robbery at age 18, and that was the dumbest thing I could have everdone! Hmmm, but they list me as a sex offender for the rest of my life, its simple the government should have made more categories of criminal confinement instead of just criminal confinement. Okay me, Im 23 years old, get A’s in college at IndianaTech, I drive 2008 pontiac G6, I pray everyday that god forgives me for what I did, and he has, why can’t society forgive me? Hmmm, because other people that commited criminal confinent, did it in such a durastic way, that makes me suffer for the rest of my life, and karma will come back. I will find the loophole in my case and won’t stop until I die, the government needs to reevaluate, and put there heads together and do some much needed brainstorming on the criminal connfinment law.
