UPDATE:

A local newspaper is reporting:

Fort Wayne’s minor league franchise will have a new name by the end of this week. The team is working on a news conference, tentatively scheduled for Thursday at the Grand Wayne Center, to announce the name. A press release with full details is expected Wednesday.

So I thought I’d move this prior post to the top of the fold.

Checking domain names you get this:

FORTWAYNETINCAPS.COM
   Administrative Contact, Technical Contact:
      Alex Short                <snip>@streamlinetechnologies.com
      1021 Chapel Court
      Franklin, TN 37069

   Record expires on 09-Jul-2009.
   Record created on 09-Jul-2008.

This is the same administrative contact for fortwaynewizards.com.

The boys at “What’s Going Downtown” have checked other domains (for other names) and found several others registered as well.

00000appleseedAWB has been informed the new name for the Fort Wayne minor league baseball team is the “Fort Wayne Tin Caps”, as in Johnny Appleseed wore a tin cap.

I called the Wizards and spoke to Jared Parcell and at first he offered “no comment”. When I told him I was running with the story today, he was was a bit taken aback and placed me on hold for a few minutes. He came back with another “no comment”, adding that they have not decided on a team name and would not for two weeks.

From Wiki:

One cool autumnal night, while lying by his camp-fire in the woods, he observed that the mosquitoes flew in the blaze and were burnt. Johnny, who wore on his head a tin utensil which answered both as a cap and a mush pot, filled it with water and quenched the fire, and afterwards remarked, “God forbid that I should build a fire for my comfort, that should be the means of destroying any of His creatures.”

Many people dispute whether John Chapman, his real name, ever wore a tin pot on his head.

Funny thing, Dan…when you showed that picture of Johnny Appleseed, the only thing that came to mind regarding headgear was (actually)…POTHEAD!

And in some respects, that would fit this venue in numerous ways…LOL!

    ;)

  2. Whoever is picking names for our local sports teams should be fired! That name sucks worse than the Mad Ants.

  3. I actually like the Mad Ants name. Was personally hoping the baseball team would stay away from a Johnny Appleseed theme altogether tho.

I think the name fits the Harrison Square “pushers” very well – They have, since the beginning, been holding our their “tin cups” for the “alms” of the city of Fort Wayne, the State of Indiana, the Grand Wayne Center, the Goldstine Foundation, the Jefferson Pointe owners, the Fort Wayne City Common Council, and now Parkview Health Services. It is only fitting that they be named as beggers, or is it stealers?

  5. Raced White Male says:

That might just be the most retarded sports team name ever.

    John:
I think some people in Pittsburgh might take exception to using “Stealers”, no matter which way it’s spelled…LOL!

  7. Ha. Ironically, Pennsylvania also has a Johnny Appleseed festival. Guess the name is not all that exculsive to the area after all. I’m still holding out hope that this name is a foil and a different name will be announced when it is oficially made.

  8. I posted a comment on the wrong entry. I still say the Fort Wayne BedPans or Packnett’s Protologists fits better.

The TinMan; “if I only had a brain!”
The Mad Ants NAME was/is ok but the mascot is retarded!!

Some of you in here are just too funny!! I am about to wizz(ard) myself!!

  9. El Fatale says:

Fort Wayne Tax Leaches would be better.

  10. That is a good one too.

My station thinks that their new name should be the Fort Wayne Questionable Investments…… kinda long, and one hell of a mouthful, but damn it’s right on the money!
