It’s curtains for the presidential campaign of Fred Thompson, whose campaign failed to capitalize on early momentum and never won any presidential contests.
“Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for president of the United States,” read a statement that the former Tennessee senator released this afternoon.
“I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.”
It’s really a shame his campaign never took off. So much for late starts. Huckabee’s out of money, and so is Guiliani. McCain will never swing the conservative right, so I’m giving the odds to Romney.

Dan,
I think Thompson was probably the best candidate to take out Hilary or Barack. I think Thompson got hurt by the fact that he started late, had no money and Huckabee. Thompson and Huckabee were after the same “core” in my opinion but Huckabee was more conservative and took votes away from Thompson…or as the Huckabee camp will argue…Thompson tooks votes from Huckabee.
That said, I think Fred Thompson is in the best position to be the VP candidate. His highly conservative message and views will draw the Evangelicals to the polls on the election day and will give the Republicans a strong showing in the south in November.
All the “experts” think that the Republican’s core conservatives were being tugged by the likes of Huckabee and McCain. Those of us who represent this core would never vote for Populist Huckabee or Liberal McCain. Hell, I am not even sure that either are really Republicans.
So with the best of the rest, Thompson and Hunter off the list, we are left with the eastern Republicans, Giuliani and Romney …both liberals at heart, even if they are singing the Conservative hymns for the benefit of the Religious Right.
I am stuck with choosing between two men whom I respect for their leadership skills but not their thinking. Blue State politicians are scary. On the other hand, the Dem candidates are absolutely frighteningly incompetent.
Democrats would love for Romney to get the Republican nomination.
Kody,
And republicans would love for Billary to get the dumbocrat nomination.
Fred Thompson acts like I felt before I got my thyroid problem take care of.
