I’m almost back to 100% health-wise, and with tomorrow being my 50th birthday two presents already await me.
First, I’m giving up smoking after 34 years of the nasty habit. I’ve had this planned for the better part of a year, and quite frankly, I’m really looking forward to it.
The second, Lieutenant Governor Skillman’s office has sent me a personal invitation to blog live from the state house during Mitch Daniels’ state of the state address. That should be an experience.
INDIANAPOLIS (January 10, 2008) - Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels will deliver his 2008 State of the State address on Tuesday, January 15, 2008, to a joint session of the Indiana General Assembly in the House Chambers. The address will begin at 7 p.m. (EST) and is expected to fit in a 30-minute window.

The State of the State address also will be available live on the Internet. It may be accessed at these Web addresses: www.in.gov/gov or www.in.gov/legislative/session/video.html.
I was supposed to be at the South Carolina presidential debates blogging live last week as I was invited by the state GOP chairman. I passed the secret service check and was prepared to go, but the diverticulitis got the best of me.
Tomorrow before I head to Indianapolis I’ll be tossing out almost all smoking paraphernalia. I’ll keep one or two ashtrays for my smoking patio for visiting friends that still smoke, and for the occasional cigar from my over stocked humidor.

Dan,
Congratulations on committing to being a non-smoker. We need you around to fight the good fight. I look forward to the State of the State address; and your involvement in it.
Great to know you are kicking the habit. Hope it goes well for you.
“I’ll keep one or two ashtrays for my smoking patio for visiting friends that still smoke, and for the occasional cigar from my over stocked humidor.”
Take it from an ex-smoker who quit after 32 years. There is only one way to stop and that is total “cold turkey” withdrawal from smokes of any kind. You have to decide that non-smoking is the only solutuion and “an occasional smoke” will put you right back into cigarettes.
If your friends are friends at all, they will not smoke in front of you, at least for 60-90 days. Having said tha, I quit 17 years ago and my wife has continued to smoke. BTW, I do not lecture her that her SHS will kill me. I do ask her not to smoke in the same room that I am in because I truly cannot stand the smell of cigarette smoke.
In the meantime, smoke em if you got em.
Dan,
Though we disagree on almost everything I am glad to see you are going to quit smoking.
My father started smoking when he was 12. Whenver someone said that smoking caused cancer, he would say they were crazy. Until he got lung cancer.
I never started, and know that it is hard to quit….but I wish you the best.
If this is what works for you & others…go for it! Chantix by Pfizer
is thrilled with the profits. Hell, so is the local government.
It’s smokin’ on the political socialistic side. Let the people of small minds tell ya how to Live and by the way…IS this what’s good for America.
Don’t breathe air, don’t drink water because the air & water
might be cancerous and a killer.
By the way, Science has an analogy called genetics
Either you have a gene toward cancer or you don’t.
Who decides?
There are alot of cancerous deals on the Socialist well-being
front.
Looking forward to reading your live commentary but I’ll have to catch it after the fact. Good luck…
Dan:
I can help you with that OVER-strocked humidor…REAL easy.
Care to drop ‘em off, or need I drive to you?
As to smoking…I smoke, as does the wife (the cats don’t…yet)
MY G’father died of cancer, as did my Dad…I’m just trying to prove, beyond all shadow of any doubt that smoking IS hereditary…
And I’m doing it ALL…WITHOUT a government GRANT…so THERE!
Good luck with trying to cut back (only quitters really “quit”…ask any drill sargeant).
