I received an email yesterday that posed this question:

I’ve heard that the city is supposed to be enforcing the law that says that you can’t have a political sign on a public right of way. I was wondering if you could explain to me what they mean by right of way, and how I can report it.

I found out the city actually has a Right-of-Way department, so I called them - (260) 427-1144. For my street the right-of-way is 50 feet from the center of the road. That would put the end of the right-of-way pretty close to the front porch.

I explained I had political signs in the yard and wanted to make sure I was in compliance with the new ordinance. They informed me that as long as the signs were inside the property marker/survey pins I would be within compliance.

This begs a question; since the Fort Wayne Police Department is among city employees picking up signs, are they checking for survey pins?
