Fort Wayne police are looking for a man wanted for questioning in an attack against a 14-year-old Lakeside Middle School student two weeks ago.
The person of interest is 26-year-old Zaid Torres Bernal. He is 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, Hispanic with brown hair, brown eyes and a scar near his right eye, spokesman Michael Joyner said.
Police are investigating the attack as a possible abduction attempt. It occurred near St. Joseph Boulevard and Forest Avenue, just south of East State Boulevard, at 7:20 a.m. April 17.
The Lakeside Middle School student told police she was on her way to the bus stop when she was grabbed from behind and shoved to the ground by a man. The girl’s classmates heard her scream and ran to help. They found the man on top of her and kicked and hit him until he ran from the area and drove south on Parnell Avenue, Joyner said.
The man was described as in his 20s, 5-foot-9, thin, Hispanic, with a mustache, black hair and wearing a red or orange zipped hooded sweatshirt. He was driving a black or dark purple vehicle that might have been a Pontiac. The car had a factory-installed spoiler on the trunk, Joyner said
Bernal has an active warrant in Allen County for parole violation, according to www.indianasmostwanted.com. According to the Indiana Department of Correction database, Bernal was charged with possession of cocaine and residential entry in October 2005.
Anyone with information on Bernal’s whereabouts is asked to contact police at 427-1222 or Crime Stoppers at 436-7867.
